When testing mushroom coffee brands for Taste of Home, one name kept surfacing: Clevr Blends. The brand has built a devoted following for its functional beverage mixes, and though matcha wasn’t part of my routine at the time, I took note of its Matcha SuperLatte.

Fast-forward to today, and matcha seems to be everywhere — on social media, coffee shop menus, and eventually in my own routine, thanks to my sister, who introduced me to it as a gentler alternative to cold brew. So when I finally got the chance to try Clevr’s Matcha SuperLatte, I was genuinely curious. Mushroom beverages and matcha are two of the biggest wellness drink trends right now, and after my first sip, the combination delivered.

As a registered dietitian, I regularly look for ways to incorporate functional ingredients into my routine, so drinks that combine matcha, adaptogens and mushrooms naturally catch my attention. Over the years I’ve tested everything from mushroom coffees to mushroom hot cocoa, but Clevr’s Matcha SuperLatte quickly distinguished itself. The blend combines ceremonial-grade shade-grown matcha with lion’s mane, reishi, ashwagandha and probiotics in one easy-to-make drink.

The brand also offers flavored varieties — Honey Pistachio Matcha, Honey Lavender Matcha, Honey Vanilla Matcha and Iced Strawberry Matcha — but I started with the original. What stood out most was that it actually tastes good. While some functional beverages lean heavily on earthy flavors, this one is creamy, lightly sweet and approachable. It tastes more like a treat than a wellness product.

It’s also remarkably convenient. On busy mornings, adding water and a handheld frother produces a café-style latte in minutes, with no added milk or sweetener needed. The result feels comforting and nourishing.

That said, it doesn’t taste exactly like a traditional matcha latte. The added mushrooms, adaptogens and creamy base create a richer, more complex flavor profile. Matcha purists may prefer something simpler, but I personally enjoyed the extra depth.

To see how it stacked up against my usual coffee shop order, I tested it both hot and iced. For the iced version, I mixed 3 tablespoons of the SuperLatte mix with 8 ounces of water, stirred, frothed it with a handheld frother and poured it over ice. I also picked up an iced matcha latte with almond milk from a popular coffee chain for a side-by-side comparison. The difference was immediately noticeable — the coffee shop version tasted milder and more straightforward, with the earthy, slightly grassy flavor typically associated with matcha, while Clevr’s version offered noticeably more creaminess and complexity.

Between the flavor, the gentler caffeine boost and the thoughtful blend of functional ingredients, this mushroom matcha has earned a permanent spot in my cupboard.
